The Geopark Swabian Alb, which covers the entire Alb, is a region with a unique geological and archaeological heritage. With its world-renowned fossil sites, the Jurassic period is literally embedded within the stone of the Swabian Alb, as well as being one of the cave richest regions of Germany. The Karst landscape has formed over millions of years with unique fossil deposits, volcanic craters and even a meteorite crater, as well as glacial caves which contain the oldest artwork of mankind itself.

The goal of the Geoparks is to protect geological and cultural heritage, as well as creating initiatives that contribute to sustainable regional development in cooperation with the population. Moreover, Geoparks aim to convey an awareness and an understanding of global and climate change.

The Swabian Alb is a relatively uniformly definable landscape area, its structure is determined mainly by rocks of the Jura period. (Jurassic, Middle Jurassic, Upper Jurassic).
